ISL has been a significant contributor in the development of NASA’s Artemis Program, which is slated to have its maiden voyage on August 29th, 2022.  Artemis is a human spaceflight program which will explore and establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon.  Human spaceflight as part of the program will be launched by NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS) and facilitated by the Orion crewed spacecraft.  ISL developed modeling tools to help inform the early selection of launch vehicle configurations and spacecraft features that led to the final designs of both the SLS and Orion.  These included the development of a forecasting tool to rapidly predict launch vehicle reliabilities, as well as a tool to predict the likelihood of successful crew abort in the event of an accident situation during launch.  Utilizing these tools ISL conducted safety and reliability analyses of many different launch vehicle concepts to aid in the shaping of design requirements and the minimization of risk in the forthcoming program.
