Passive Sonar Intercept (PSI-Ψ)

The Passive Sonar Intercept (PSI-Ψ) System is a wide bandwidth acoustic intercept, processing, and display system with fully integrated hydro-acoustic analysis capability. The system provides the analyst with the capability to detect and classify active sonars, weapons, and other potential acoustic threat signals in real time which permits rapid tactical decisions.

PSI also provides the analyst with the display and post processing tools to perform hydro-acoustic analysis processing and display functions to support detailed broadband, narrow band, transient, and demodulated noise (DEMON) analyses of passive acoustic signals.

The PSI system consists of two distinct components:
o Intercept Sonar (INTS)
o Frequency Analysis System (FAS)

The Intercept Sonar provides the submarine crew with capability to detect, classify and track active SONARs, weapons, and other potential acoustic threat signals. The INTS processing and display units receive acoustic data from an Intercept Hydrophone Array located topside near the bow of the submarine. This array consists of 16 hydrophones arranged in a circular configuration, each covering the frequency band from 1kHz to 100 kHz.
The FAS system allows for multiple channels to be processed simultaneously. Each channel can include data from one of the following sources:
• Single beams from the Intercept signal processing
• Digital WAV files
• Acoustic data from other shipboard sensors/systems

The FAS system allows for broadband processing, narrowband processing of operator selectable frequency bands, DEMON (demodulated noise) processing selectable bands, transient analysis, tracking of narrowband signals, and audio analysis.

The system processing is housed in a ruggedized rack that is built to MIL-STD specifications to withstand shipboard shock, vibration, temperature, and environmental conditions. The Hydrophone Array and other outboard equipment are made from corrosion-resistant materials such as titanium to provide high-reliability and long service life.

The PSI system has been successfully deployed by numerous countries and has a proven track record of high-performance service.
