Information Systems Laboratories, Inc. (ISL) is seeking a Principal Analyst for a full-time position on the Nuclear Safety Analysis team. ISL (www.islinc.com) is a high-tech, employee-owned technology-development company. ISL’s Energy, Space, and Risk Management division provides comprehensive support to the nuclear and space industries, including nuclear safety analysis, complex modeling and simulation, nuclear software development throughout the entire software lifecycle, regulatory framework and procedures development, waste management tracking, risk management, and cybersecurity.
Job Description
The analyst will work alongside safety analysis experts performing a mix of research and development and customer contract work. Customers are generally advanced reactor and fuel vendors requiring ISL’s unique safety analysis expertise to meet licensing requirements of the U.S. NRC or DOE.
ISL has a culture of building from fundamentals to solve complicated engineering problems in the nuclear industry, including modeling and simulation of:
- System and core thermal-hydraulics (RELAP5-3D, TRACE, VIPRE-01)
- Nuclear physics (MCNP, SCALE, PARCS)
- Fuel performance (FAST)
- Radiological consequences (RADTRAD)
Work tasks may include hazard analysis, safety basis event identification, model and simulation development, transient analyses, and safety basis documentation for existing LWR, SMR, and advanced reactor designs.
This position includes writing technical reports and white papers, creating presentations, and other related tasks needed to communicate ideas, problems, and solutions.

Requirements
- A B.S. or M.S. degree in Nuclear or Mechanical Engineering
- 15–20 years of experience in the nuclear industry
- Prior safety analysis and/or reactor design experience
- A self-starter who:
- Works well within a team or independently
- Has demonstrated ability to solve complex problems
- Can adapt to changing situations
- Demonstrates a strong commitment to verifying results and ensuring they are technically sound
- Experience with fluid dynamics, heat transfer, nuclear physics, and/or structural mechanics
- Experience with RELAP5-3D or TRACE
- Experience with U.S. NRC licensing (NUREGs, Reg. Guides, etc.)
- Experience with safety basis events, categories, and transient analysis
- Familiarity with historic, operating, and advanced nuclear reactors
Desired Skills
- Demonstrated knowledge of the fundamentals of nuclear physics
- Familiarity with nuclear quality assurance (ASME NQA-1)
- Familiarity with U.S. DOE authorization basis
- Experience with design basis accident dose analysis
- Experience with radiation shield design and modeling and simulation
- Experience with:
- General calculation software such as Mathcad and/or Octave,
- Nuclear physics codes such as MCNP, SCALE, PARCS, etc.,
- CFD and Multiphysics codes,
- Solid modeling or CAD, and
- Basic scripting or light programming skills (Python, Java, etc.)
Security Clearance
This position requires eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government security clearance.
