MAK Technologies and ISL Partner to Deliver Physically Accurate SAR Imaging for MAK ONE Synthetic Environments
Cambridge, MA, January 27, 2025 – MAK Technologies (MAK), a company of ST Engineering North America, and ISL, a leader in radar and radio frequency simulation, today announced a partnership to develop RFView® for MAK ONE, a cutting-edge solution for generating physically accurate Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images fully correlated with MAK ONE synthetic environments.
MAK will contribute its deep expertise in synthetic environments and modeling and simulation while ISL adds its four decades of innovation in radar simulation and analysis to the collaboration. RFView® for MAK ONE will use real-time GPU-based ray tracing to produce physics-based SAR images, replicating the natural characteristics of real SAR imagery, including Gibbs ringing, foreshortening, SAR shadows, and complex multi-bounce effects.
“By combining MAK’s ability to generate rich geo-specific 3D virtual worlds with ISL’s radar technology, we’re setting a new standard for simulated SAR image generation,” said Len Granowetter, Chief Technology Officer at MAK. “This partnership continues to expand the MAK ONE ecosystem with complementary technologies that enhance training realism and operational readiness.”
RFView® for MAK ONE will use MAK’s VR-Vantage Image Generator to provide 3D geometry and material data to ISL’s RFView® radar simulation based on the terrain and entities in a MAK ONE synthetic environment. This ensures that SAR images correlate precisely with out-the-window views and EO/IR sensor feeds rendered by other components of the MAK ONE system, including procedurally generated terrain elements and dynamic changes to the terrain triggered by detonations or combat engineering events that occur in a simulation scenario.
“RFView® has long been used by radar engineers with high-fidelity requirements, but our latest versions meet the real-time needs of simulation and training users,” said Joe Guerci, CEO of ISL. “Our collaboration with MAK means we can run on the kinds of terrains, environments, and interoperability protocols required by these customers.”
